The problem is that I _can_ make various tweaks with the settings on my
printers, including two Brothers, and I don't get anything like what you
have. And no-one else seems to have a similar problem. This makes me suspect
that the problem is something on your system. I'd back up a bit, create a new
user, and see if the problem persists there. If it does, I'd reset printing
parameters and reinstall the printers and see if it persists. If the problem
is still there, I'd do an archive install. That should remove it.
The thing is, all of that is a lot of work when we don't know what's causing
the problem.
