When I print from Safari, the left margin is not cut off. So, how about giving some of your details? (OS, Safari version, printer model, printer dialog settings, etc.)

if turning off the first one doesn't fix it, turn this off too.

No effect at all. In fact, when I do turn on borders, the text extends beyond the border and hides it, past the point where printing can occur. So I end up with a border line that's broken, and text extending into the left and being cut off beyond the border.

There's something seriously wrong. I have two Brother printers, and both of them do NOT exhibit this kind of problem, from Safari or any other app.
Check and see what margins you have set. Check and see what happens when you print from something else.

That's sort of my original question -- it's only Safari, and I wanted to know how I could set margins. Safari, at any point size, doesn't seem to have any way of communicating the actual printable area of the Brothers printer. It may be that other apps simply underestimate it to a safe area, and Safari tries to use what it perceives as the entire printable area, but is actually overestimating where this area ends. in any case, Safari "overscans" with this particular printer. No matter what the point size is and no matter what the material is.

And the settings in "Page Setup" are:
Settings: Page Attributes Format for: Brother MFC-9840CDW Paper Size: US Letter Orientation: Portrait Scale: 100%
Correct? ('Format for: Any Printer' would probably work too, but to be sure I'd select the precise printer in use.)

That's it. I don't see any way to specifically set margins, however, for Safari. The drivers selected are for the Brother. All other apps don't seem to have any trouble. The Brother folks were particularly unhelpful. I'm just surprised that no one else has run into this problem, this being standard Safari and standard Brother software, with no 3rd party software involved that I can see.

I tried this, and set the paper size both larger and smaller, then set the border from 0.25 inches to zero and up to 2, and all combinations had no effect. That is, moving the border anywhere still results in a clipped-off page image, only the same amount of clipping occurs starting at different distances from the left edge. The amount of text cut-off is exactly the same.

Maybe the problem is with your document? Get a document from the web and try printing it without making any changes on it.

I tried printing other documents from Safari, and they all do this. Some documents, of course, are specifcally formatted to eliminate text or images at the far left edge, but any that have text at the left border have at least 1/8-1/4 inch gone. Those documents, of course, print fine in Word or other editors.

Do you have a custom style sheet set in the Preferences Advanced tab? You can set various page things in CSS in '@media print' sections, so maybe there's something there making Safari do something odd. Or if there isn't, maybe you can tweak things there yourself.

Nope - nothing. But if I did tweak it myself, it would still not explain why no one else has reported a similar problem with Safari and this printer. But of course, I'd still like to know why this outputs what seems to be a "magnified" image (extending beyond the borders of the page).

Actually, if you tweaked it yourself it _would_ explain why no-one else has your problem.

Does Page Setup say 'Scale: 100%' or something larger?

What I meant was that I tweaked it just now in response to the suggestion I received, and it had no effect. But it seems to me that something as essential as the print area boundaries *should* be settable.
And yes, the page setup scale is set to 100%, although I tried other sizes to try and fix this, but no success.

The problem is that I _can_ make various tweaks with the settings on my printers, including two Brothers, and I don't get anything like what you have. And no-one else seems to have a similar problem. This makes me suspect that the problem is something on your system. I'd back up a bit, create a new user, and see if the problem persists there. If it does, I'd reset printing parameters and reinstall the printers and see if it persists. If the problem is still there, I'd do an archive install. That should remove it. The thing is, all of that is a lot of work when we don't know what's causing the problem.
